What is L-Glutamine?
Glutamine is one of the building blocks found naturally in the body called amino acids. These produce valuable proteins.
How does it work?
Of all the free amino acids in the human body glutamine is the most abundant. Glutamine is naturally produced within the muscles and then distributed via the blood stream to the organs which need it. Glutamine could help gut function and the immune system amongst other processes in the body and is thought to be helpful in times of stress. It also plays a vital part in providing fuel in the forms of carbon and nitrogen to cells through out the body and is needed to produce other chemicals such as glucose.
After a traumatic injury of surgery nitrogen is essential to both repair wounds and keep organs functioning, one third of this nitrogen comes from glutamine. If your body uses up more glutamine that you muscles can make, in times of stress for example, you can suffer muscle wasting. This particularly effects those suffering from HIV and AIDS. Taking a glutamine supplement can keep this supply topped up. Certain kinds of chemotherapy can reduce the glutamine levels in the body, a supplement is thought to be able to help prevent the chemo damaging tissues and maintaining the life of the said tissues.
When Glutamine is present in sufficient amounts there is an increase in the production of growth hormones. These growth hormones are needed to help increase lean muscle mass, which would be of benefit to body builders.
Used To Treat
Post surgery recovery, swelling and soreness of the mouth due to chemotherapy for cancer, improving the general wellbeing of those who have suffered traumatic injuries, treating the intestinal problems and weight loss associated with HIV and AIDS.
This amino acid contains high amounts of antioxidants. Antioxidants help our bodies fight against something called free radicals. These free radicals have been linked to contributing towards certain diseases such as cancers. Antioxidants can also help with boosting our immune system, which is our body’s first line of defence when it comes to fighting illness.
How to take/dosage
For the mouth problems associated with chemotherapy swish and swallow glutamine suspension 4g every 4 hours around the clock starting when you get the first dose of chemo and continuing until you have a hospital discharge or the symptoms are resolved.
For the wasting arising from HIV or AIDS 40g daily has been found to be the most effective dosage.
Possible side effects
Possible side effects from taking a glutamine supplement include the worsening of such illnesses as hepatic encephalopathy, monosodium glutomate sensitivity and mania.
Interactions have been noted with those taking anticonvulsants
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding l-glutamine is possibly safe when used in the short term. Not enough is known about the long term effects so err on the side of caution and avoid using it.
Things to note
Adults should take no more than 40g of glutamine a day and children no more than 3g.
