How to take Cod Liver Oil? 

The recommended dosage of cod liver oil is 1-2 capsules containing 1000mg of oil, per day. For better absorption take the cod liver oil supplement with a meal. It is important not to exceed the recommended daily dose.

Scientific researchers have recommended following doses.
If you take the supplement by mouth:

  • For lowering triglycerides: 20 mL of cod liver oil per day.
  • For high cholesterol: 30 mL of cod liver oil per day.
  • For lowering blood pressure: 20 mL of cod liver oil per day.

 Also The American Heart Association recommends 1g daily and also it is advised for pregnant women to increase intake of DHA by at least 200mg daily.

This is a food supplement that should not be used to replace a normal, balanced diet. Please consult your GP before taking supplements if you are taking any medication or if you are pregnant.

Possible side effects include belching, bad breath, heartburn, and nosebleeds are some of the side effects that can be caused by using cod liver oil supplements. Also high dose can prevent blood from clotting. While a high dose can increase Vitamin A (cause hypervitaminosis A) and D level in your body, also it can cause nausea and loose stools as well. Hence, it is advised you consult your GP if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or sensitive to aspirin. 

Although cod liver oil is likely to be safe for most of people, there are some concerns when taking it in high doses. Taking more than 3 g per day can prevent blood from clotting and increase the chance of bruising and bleeding.

  • High doses can reduce the immune systems effectiveness. Mostly elderly people and people who take medication for a reduced immune system should check with their GP.

Therefore take high doses only under medical supervision.

  • During pregnancy and breast- feeding it is important to check with your GP before taking. There are some risks of causing birth defects,
  • Liver disease: cod liver oil might increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Fish or seafood allergy: People who are allergy to seafood may be also allergic to cod liver oil supplements.
  • Bipolar disorder: This supplement might increase the symptoms of this condition.
  • Depression: Might increase symptoms of this condition.
  • Diabetes: High dosages can make it difficult to control blood sugar.
  • High blood pressure: Taking medication and cod liver oil supplements together can reslt in low blood pressure
  • HIV/AIDS and other conditions in which the immune system response is lowered
  • An implanted defibrillator: Some researchers have disclosed that cod liver oil can cause irregular heart beat in patients with an implanted defibrillator.
  • Familial adenomatous polyposis: There is a belief, that cod liver oil might increase the risk for cancer of the people who already have this condition.
