What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar has a pale to medium amber colour and is derived from cider apples. It is made by crushing apples and squeezing the juice out. Next, yeast and bacteria are added to the juices to start an alcoholic fermentation process, and the sugars are turned into alcohol. Finally, a second fermentation is implemented to convert the alcohol into vinegar by acetic acid-forming bacteria.

The vinegar made this way is rich in minerals and vitamins. The flavourful Apple Cider Vinegar contains Vitamin C and Vitamins B1, B2 and B6. In addition it is also a good source of folic acid, iron, magnesium, niacin, calcium and potassium among others. It is often used in the preparation of medicine.

Three groups of obese Japanese participated in a double-blind experiment. They were similar in body-mass indexes (BMI), weight and the circumference of the waist. The three groups drank vinegar on a daily basis over a period of 12 weeks contained in a 500ml drink. The drink contained 30ml vinegar for one group and 15ml for the second group while no vinegar was given for the third group. The experiment conducted on the basis of an equal calorie intake and amount of exercise for all yielded results that showed lowering of BMI, waist measurements, serum triglyceride, visceral fat and body weight in the 30ml and 15ml groups. The weight loss was marginal being 1.7kg for the 30ml group and 1.5kg for the 15ml group. The conclusion of this study was that it was possible to reduce obesity by the consumption of vinegar.

Who should use Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple Cider Vinegar supplements should be used by persons suffering from high blood pressure and cholesterol, allergies, flu, and heartburn.

Some evidence from other studies has shown that conditions such as tiredness and gout can be eased by taking these supplements.     A study was tested in people living in Japan where 175 obese but healthy individuals took either water or vinegar daily for 12 consecutive weeks. As a constant, their diets were similar and they all kept a food journal. After 1 week, those individuals who used vinegar had lost more weight. On average, the vinegar group lost 1 – 2 pounds over a 3-month period. After the study was over, these individuals went back to their daily water routine and gained all the weight back.     The most thoroughly researched benefit of apple cider vinegar is in the area of type 2 diabetes. Several studies have proven that vinegar helps lower the blood glucose levels.

    A study conducted in 2004 in the American Diabetes Foundation’s publications Diabetes Care1, showed that taking vinegar supplements before meals increased insulin sensitivity and reduced the glucose and insulin levels that tend to occur after meals. This study was par taken by 29 individuals who were then divided into three groups:

    1. One third had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
    2. One third had pre-diabetic signs

    3. One third were healthy
