What is Red Clover?

Red clover is a type of plant of which the flower heads are used in medicine

How does it work?

Red clover naturally contains isoflavones which the body then converts into phytoestrogens which are very similar to the female hormone oestrogen.

Used To Treat

Red clover is taken my many women to treat hot flushes,  during the menopause, for breast tenderness and PMS  and to lower cholesterol. Other uses, again without much evidence to support it, is in the prevention of cancer, indigestion, coughs, bronchitis, whooping cough, asthma attacks and sexually transmitted diseases. Red clover is also applied to the skin to treat sores, burns, and other chronic skin problems such as psoriasis and eczema.

Key benefits

It is estimated that approximately 75-85% of women living in the UK experience common symptoms associated with the menopause. During this period, women’s oestrogen levels begin to fluctuate, which can trigger many uncomfortable and distressing symptoms that can have serious implications for their health. It is difficult to predict how long these symptoms last - in many cases it can be years.
Phyto-oestrogenic herbs, such as red clover extracts, are thought to be effective in helping to replace the natural oestrogen that is lost during the menopause.

How to take/dosage

There are no set dosages for red clover as there are many factors in play including age, the reason you are taking it and whether you are getting it via a food flavouring or a supplement.

Possible side effects

Red clover has been reported as producing such side effects as muscle aches, vaginal bleeding or spotting, headaches, nausea and a rash,

Interactions

Medications that have been notes as having moderate interactions with red clover include contraceptive pills, oestrogen supplements,  medications which are altered by the liver such as cytochromes, and coagulants.

Safety concerns

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding is most likely safe when taken through food but it is not recommended at these times to take an oral supplement.

Things to note

Red clover (trifolium pratense) is a perennial herb that grows wild throughout Europe and Asia. This popular natural extract contains all four phyto (plant) oestrogens that are thought to mimic the female hormone oestrogen
