What is Lutein?
Lutein is a carotenoid vitamin and is related to both Vitamin A and beta-carotene. Foods which are naturally rich in lutein include spinach, kale, broccoli, kiwi fruit, orange peppers, grapes, courgettes, squash and fresh orange juice.
How does it work?
Lutenoid is 1 of the 2 major carotenoids which is found in the colour pigment of the eye made up of the retina and the macula. Lutenoid is thought to work by filtering light this protecting the tissues of the eye from the potential damage caused by the sun.
Used To Treat
Lutein works best when ingested as part of a high fat meal. It is thought of by many as the eye vitamin as it is widely used in medication used to treat such ailments as AMD; age related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and cataracts. Some people eat a diet rich is lutein as a prevention for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breast cancer and colon cancer.
It is widely believed that supplementation with lutein can increase macular pigment density in the eye, which may support the maintenance of normal eye function and promote healthy eyes. There is also increasing evidence that lutein may also play a role in preventing or slowing the appearance of macular degeneration.
How to take/dosage
Lutein is likely safe to be taken by most people even when there is a high dietary intake of 6.9-11.7mg per day. A lutein supplement of 10mg per day for a year have been used safely.
Possible side effects
No known side effects
No known interactions with any other medication
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding is most likely safe when taken through food.
Things to note
While many multivitamin supplements contain lutein they are usually in very small amounts of around 0.25mg per tablet.
