Lycopene is a bright red carotenoid pigment and is an important factor in photosynthetic organisms. It can travel through the blood stream and is found in most body tissues. Lycopene's eleven conjugated double bonds give its deep red color and it is an antioxidant. It is a member of the carotenoid family and contains carbon and hydrogen.
Lycopene is commonly found in in red fruits and vegetables such as: carrots, watermelons, gac, and papayas, and also found in beans or parsley. Tomatoes, for example, contain high levels of lycopene and can be cooked to increase assimilation from the digestive tract into the bloodstream.
Several conditions that Lycopene can be used for are asthma and the hardening of the arteries. For asthma, exercising after taking the supplement may help to improve lung function and for the hardening of the arteries, it may help to reduce the risk of heart disease.
