What is Goji Berry?

The goji berry is a shining red berry from a leafy shrub native to China, the Goji berry was first used in herbal treatment of disease by Chinese healers. Full of antioxidants, it is increasingly used in the United States. However, adequate research into the use and side effects of the Goji berry has not yet been performed. The most common name for the Goji berry is wolfberry.

How does it work?

Components of the berry may cause blood pressure and sugar levels to drop. Additionally, Goji berries contain zeaxanthin, a plant pigment. This carotenoid may keep the retinas of eyes healthy. For this reason, doctors recommend its use for eye health, especially in the prevention of macular degeneration.

Regarding the prevention of cancer, the numerous antioxidants present in this berry may help to maintain healthy cells.

Used To Treat

  • Diabetes.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Cancer.
  • Blood circulation problems.
  • Dizziness.
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Blurred vision (eye tonic)
  • Macular Degeneration (eye tonic)
  • Other eye disorders (eye tonic)
  • Sexual health - sperm count and erectile disfunction
  • Other conditions.

Key benefits

In addition to being a powerful antioxidant the Goji berry potentially lowers blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Additionally, Goji berry products are said to increase sexual health in both sexes, especially increasing sperm count and lessening or preventing erectile dysfunction (ED). However, this claim has not been researched enough to be reliable. Other possible benefits include liver protection, cholesterol reduction, and cancer prevention.

Goes well with

Goji berries are used with other ingredients in recipes, especially as a juice combined with other fruits, for example in antioxidant smoothies.

How to take/dosage

No standard dosage is available, and dosing varies based on how old an individual is and her state of wellness, among other factors. Consult doctors or medical staff before determining your dosage. Generally it is recommeneded to take one tablet daily, preferably with food.

Possible side effects

When administered orally, Goji berries may result in nausea and vomiting or other side effects. Also, because the Goji berry contains betaine, it may increase the chance of miscarriage; expecting mothers should not use this berry. Due to its potential to cause blood pressure to drop, the Goji berry should not be used by people suffering with hypotension. If medication is being used to treat hypertension, then the Goji berry can drop the blood pressure to lower even further.

The Goji berry can affect medicines designed to be altered by the liver. Sometimes, as in the case of warfarin, it can lengthen the duration the drug is in a persons system, causing undesired side effects (see below). Also, drugs designed to manage high blood pressure levels can combine with the positive effect of the Goji berry to negatively lower blood pressure to an unhealthy level. Users should be careful combining supplements containing Goji Berry with the following:

Medications that the liver breaks down, including:

  • amitriptyline (Elavil)
  • diazepam (Valium)
  • zileuton (Zyflo)
  • celecoxib (Celebrex)
  • diclofenac (Voltaren)
  • fluvastatin (Lescol)
  • glipizide (Glucotrol)
  • ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
  • irbesartan (Avapro)
  • losartan (Cozaar)
  • phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • piroxicam (Feldene)
  • tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
  • tolbutamide (Tolinase)
  • torsemide (Demadex)
  • warfarin (Coumadin)

Note: users of warfarin (Coumadin) should check their blood often when using Goji Berries as supplements. They possibly increase the duration warfarin stays in the system, leading to an increased likelihood of bruisingor loss of blood.

Pharmacy items that keep blood pressure low, including:

  • aptopril (Capoten)
  • enalapril (Vasotec)
  • losartan (Cozaar)
  • valsartan (Diovan)
  • diltiazem (Cardizem)
  • Amlodipine (Norvasc)
  • hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril)
  • furosemide (Lasix)

Safety concerns

Goji berries may cause miscarriage due to the presence of betaine, presenting too high of risk for expecting mothers to recommend their use. Of chief concern is the Goji berries reported ability to lower blood pressure, which can cause blood pressure to reach a harmfully low rate for those with already low blood pressure or those taking blood pressure medication (due to the combined effectiveness of the medication and this supplement). Finally, Goji berries have potentially harmful interactions with other drugs, especially those that regulate blood pressure or that undergo alteration in the liver.

Things to note

The Goji berry is part of the Lycium shrub, and is often referred to by that name. Numerous different products are made from the shrub and berries. Also, the health benefits and concerns are different for each part of the plant.
