What are Goji Berries?

Goji berry, the Himalayan superfood, has been utilised for over 2,000 years in parts of Asia for its medicinal properties.

Goji berry has also been known as the wolfberry. The scientific names of the plants are lycium barbarum and lycium chinense. A small red-orange berry, it is grown in the south of China and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous region. The plant is a fruit shrub, similar to a blueberry bush.

There is some debate as to whether it was Tibetan in origin and then brought to China or was used in China from the start. Nevertheless, it has been used for many centuries in that part of the world as an effective medicine and regular part of the diet. It is believed to help slow down the ageing process. The many antioxidants and vitamins assist immune system health, eyesight, mental well-being and calmness. It has also been used to help with sleep quality, diabetes, high blood pressure, weight loss and even athletic performance enhancement.

What is the Goji Berry used for?

Goji berry is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on earth. It is loaded with vitamin A and amino acids. High in vitamin C and containing 20 other trace minerals and vitamins. It has among others zinc, iron, phosphorus and riboflavin (vitamin B2).

The huge amount of vitamin A has several benefits. It is vital to maintaining good eye health and may help in the prevention of macular degeneration. Also known as beta-carotene, it is an important immune boosting ingredient. It may help ward off the flu or common cold and also help with cancer prevention. It prevents and combats existing inflammation. This can help the body to fight allergic reactions and possibly even Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. It is essential for the building of new cells, from bones, to skin, and even healthy hair. Vitamin A is required to keep the skin healthy.

The various antioxidants, vitamins A and C, along with the amino acids and protein help aid the body to refurbish itself as it ages. They fight the free radicals that accumulate with age. They also help to ward off the oxidation process. This supplement is a convenient way to make sure the body has the required components to stay healthy as it ages.

This unique combination of amino acids, proteins found in the goji berry are great for the body in other ways as well. Traditional Asian medicine has used it as a digestive aid, to help in the control of high blood pressure and high blood sugar. The goji has been utilized to reduce blood sugar by increasing glucose responsiveness. It has been used as a calming influence and anti-depressant and to boost energy levels and metabolism. It also helps regenerate the mucous membranes to fight off infection.

Recent research has also shown that it may be helpful as a cancer fighter and preventer.

How do Goji Berries work?

Components of the berry may cause blood pressure and sugar levels to drop. Additionally, Goji berries contain zeaxanthin, a plant pigment. This carotenoid may keep the retinas of eyes healthy. For this reason, doctors recommend its use for eye health, especially in the prevention of macular degeneration.

In addition to being a powerful antioxidant the Goji berry potentially lowers blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Additionally, Goji berry products are said to increase sexual health in both sexes, especially increasing sperm count and lessening or preventing erectile dysfunction (ED). However, this claim has not been researched enough to be reliable. Other possible benefits include liver protection, cholesterol reduction, and cancer prevention.
