Bilberry Extract in its raw form is a low-growing shrub, often called European Blueberry. It is because bilberry grows abundantly in the mountainous areas of Europe and is related to American Blueberries. It resembles a blueberry, but its flesh is much darker, at least in part due to anthocyanicydes. It has been used to treat circulatory conditions, and vision problems among other diseases.
The main reason it is effective against these conditions, normally thought a part of growing older, is because it is an antioxidant, any of a group of agents effective at fighting chemicals that damage cells as part of the aging process.
What are the benefits of Bilberry?
- Helps improve overall vision from illnesses as simple as nearsightedness
- Fights the effects of macular degeneration, a disease of old age that often leads to blindness
- Helps to stops the growth of cataracts
- Improves circulation in other areas of the body
Plays a role in regulating blood sugar in those with diabetes
What is Bilberry?
Bilberry is a low-growing shrub species that bears edible berries, and belongs to the Ericaceae family. This species is also known as Vacciniummyrtillus L., even though there are various closely related species. Although these fruits are similar to blueberries, this species is totally different.
Bilberry supplements are usually made from the elements of the bilberry plant. It is usually administered in pill form, or eaten as a jam. Its health benefits can be enjoyed in either way. Diabetics can eat it as a jam, and it is not likely to cause a blood sugar spike--which would in turn lead to an A1C increase if it happens too often--because of its low glycemic index.
What is Bilberry used for?
The key active ingredient within bilberries is a plant pigment flavonoid called Anthocyanadin, which may help to maintain strong blood vessels and capillaries, promoting better circulation. Many health practitioners believe they may also help counteract the effects of free radicals throughout the body.
The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry published a study which showed that the mice provided with both fermented and non-fermented bilberry extracts that were included in their daily diet registered a decreased risk of developing arterial plaques that can lead to heart conditions. Although the both forms of extract proved out to be effective, the fermented one seemed to reduce plaque formation more. Specialists think that bilberries are good for our health because they contain anthocyanidins. These substances are a type of flavonoids that cause blue-red colouration to several vegetables and fruits such as red cabbage and blueberries.
There is evidence that this supplement also helps in bringing some kidney issues under control as well. For instance, doctors can tell that some degree of kidney function has been impaired if, after a urine test, there are abnormally high levels of a substance known as creatinine in the urine. According to the Zhion website, there is evidence that this extract plays a role in lowering this substance in the body to normal levels.
How does Bilberry work?
Bilberry Extract is capable of helping in the fight against so many diseases and disorders related to ageing because it is an antioxidant. It is a known enemy of free radicals, which are atoms or groups of atoms that are oxidized and can cause damage when they react with DNA molecules or others, causing the well-known symptoms of ageing.
It also contains anthrocyanosides, which play a role in strengthening blood vessels, improve blood flow and help to maintain healthy circulation. This is especially important for people with diabetes, who must pay special attention to circulatory issues. Indeed, impaired circulation is a serious health condition with diabetes, and may lead to amputations if the limbs are affected.
Who should use Bilberry?
The only main contraindication for this herb is for people who are taking blood-thinning medication. It's best to check with your doctor before using, as the drug may interact with this herbal supplement. Also, if you are allergic to the ingredients of this drug then of course you shouldn't use it.
Otherwise, it is considered harmless for the most part. But if you're suffering from any chronic condition, any supplement you decide to start using should be discussed with your primary care physician. Additionally, if you're pregnant, take only on the advice and supervision of a doctor.
How to take Bilberry?
The dosage or form in which you should choose to take bilberry extract depends largely on why you are taking it to begin with. For instance, for eye problems the recommended dosage is 80-160 milligrams of standardized extract 2 to 3 times per day. For varicose veins, consume 80-160 milligrams of standardized extract three times daily.
Take one to two capsules daily with food
What studies have been conducted on Bilberry?
Studies on humans are not currently plentiful concerning bilberry extract. However, according to Herbal Wisdom, scientific studies that have been performed have shown that this supplement can have a lowering effect on blood sugar, as well as cholesterol, two key players in illnesses such as heart attack and stroke.
As far as the eyes are concerned, it has been shown to improve vision--particularly night vision on soldiers during World War II, although initially medical scholars dismissed this as nonsense. In recent years, however, further research has pointed towards these studies being grounded in truth. More research needs to be done.
